Labour funding: corruption's coming home!

Kerry McCarthyIt’s been very quiet over on Kerry McCarthy’s blog since the Labour Party funding scandal caught fire earlier this week.

It’s just silence – not even an attempt at the latest unbelievable and threadbare “line to take” – from the Bristol East MP and PPS to International Secretary Douglas Alexander. No homilies or soothing explanations from Kerry and no claims as yet that this major tide of corruption engulfing public life and gently lapping at the door of Downing Street itself is merely the result of a few minor administrative errors and an unfortunate misreading of party funding laws.

Oh but hang on a minute . . . Did we just say McCarthy was Private Parliamentary Secretary to Douglas Alexander? Fancy that! Our local MP is the commons bag carrier and fixer for Gordon’s right hand man, election coordinator and the former Transport Secretary who’s right at the centre of these corruption allegations.

If the rising tide of sewage is lapping at Gordon’s door then Dougie is, at least, up to his waist in the shit. During Alexander’s time as Transport Secretary, a controversial business park, Durham Green, which the dodgy donor David Abrahams is believed to be behind, was given the go-ahead by Dougie’s Highways Agency after it was originally refused planning permission by Durham City Council. Coincidentally this change of heart happened only after Labour had received generous donations from the property developer through his intermediaries.

Alexander at present denies being involved in the planning decision. But denials don’t mean much from Labour figures any more do they? Indeed Dougie’s sister Wendy, the Scottish Labour leader, just yesterday denied any knowledge of a donation from a chap called Paul Green, based in Jersey. Today we find a thank you letter dated 5 October 2007 from Wendy to, er . . . Paul Green!

Kerry’s boss Dougie also has a bit of explaining to do in his role as Labour’s General Election Co-ordinator. When Gordon Brown appointed Jon Mendelsohn as Labour’s chief fundraiser to replace Lord Levy, it was stated that he would report directly to Alexander, the General Election Co-ordinator.

So why, when it was discovered this week that Mendelsohn knew all about Abrahams’ third party donor arrangements – despite his initial denials – did he claim he had reported the facts to the disgraced Labour Party General Secretary Peter Watt instead of to his boss Alexander?

Indeed back in September/October when an election looked in the offing, it beggars belief that the party’s chief fundraiser was not in contact and reporting to the party’s General Election Co-ordinator.

But that’s what we’ve got to believe to keep honest Dougie and his boss Gordon in the clear. And we can only wonder what McCarthy, as Alexander’s assistant, knows about all this although she’s not too keen to tell it seems.

Instead we were breathlessly informed on her website on Wednesday as the scandal unfolded: “Kerry has signed an Early Day Motion, calling on the Government to take measures against excessive packaging.” Because apparently: “She agrees that more must be done to reduce levels of packaging.”

Just what was on all our minds this week Kerry. This girl will go far . . .

Labour Party funding: more, more, more!

David Abrahams and friends
David Abrahams – “The man they don’t know”!

Peter Hain is now admitting he received a £5k donation for his deputy leadership campaign from the Labour Party fundraiser at the centre of the row, Jon Mendolsohn. Apparently he just “forgot” to register this donation. Easy mistake that anyone could have made really . . .

Also today increasing interest is being taken in David Abrahams personal finances. Business journalists calculate he’s worth around £8m, which means it’s unlikely he could personally afford to be donating up to a tenth of that to the Labour Party.

So where did he get the money?

Abrahams has also told The Telegraph that he has met Gordon Brown as many times as he has “eaten porridge” in the morning.

Breaking news: Bristol Respect Party collapses

News coming in that the Bristol Respect Party is in a state of advanced collapse after a Socialist Workers Party coup at a branch meeting on Wednesday.

Respect in Bristol have gained some good election results over the last couple of years. Jerry Hicks, the controversial former Amicus convenor at Rolls Royce, came second in the Lockleaze Ward in 2006 beating Labour into third place and Paulette North came third in Easton this year against a very well-funded Labour campaign and the sitting Lib Dem councillor John Kiely, a very effective campaigner.

Full report from Liam Mac Uaid of Socialist Unity.

Labour Party funding: another day, another writ?

It just gets better and better. Gordon Brown’s under siege fundraiser the increasingly calm and rational Jon Mendelsohn has now threatened – live on BBC Radio Five Live – to sue the Evening Standard for libel!!!

Great news. That’s Labour’s second threat of a writ in two days! When will they be delivered? Here at The Blogger we can’t wait. Now there’s two opportunities at the High Court to hear all about Labour Party funding. Book your tickets early kids.

Unfortunately for Mendelson The Standard’s owners Associated Newspapers, owners also of the Daily Mail, don’t appear overly concerned by the threat. Indeed they’ve even popped The Standard’s story on the Daily Mail website in case any of us miss it.

So the line up is: some sleazy Labour Party spiv in deep shit v’s Associated Newspapers, the most influential newspaper group in the country. What could the outcome possibly be? Anyone remember Johnathan Aitken?

If you want to know why Associated are very relaxed tonight, here’s a couple of stories from Greg Palast about Mendelson:

“There are 17 people that count. To say that I am intimate with every one of them is the understatement of the century”

Brown’s Fixer Explains How It’s Done: Jon Mendelsohn and the Secret Tape

UPDATE: Another reason the Standard might be so relaxed is because their source they say is “excellent”. Indeed one of Harriet Harman’s supporters was seen last night at Shepherd’s Restaurant, Westminster with the Standard journalist that wrote the story! Oh dear. How awful. Looks like they’re all turning on each other now! This could be bloody!!!

ANOTHER UPDATE: Harriet Harman in undeclared loans shocker!!! Tonight on Newsnight.

Questions, questions 3: Bunter Eddy the gormless plonker

Richard Eddy with his golly
What the Tory Party in Bristol calls a leader . . .

What with the impending disaster that will be the Museum of Bristol; the introduction of a Residents’ Parking Zones tax; increased parking costs; a £100k spent on a pointless citizens’ jury; council care homes about to be privatised on the basis of cooked books and a fiasco unfolding in the home care service, you might have thought the Tories and their leader Bunter Eddy might have had a few questions to ask of the Labour-run council.

Not quite. Bunter – who along that pompous tosser of a sidekick, the unbearable Peter Abrahams, put this shower of Labour shits into power – will be focussing instead at next week’s council meeting on the urgent and important issue of a private email sent by a Lib Dem councillor to their colleagues.

What planet are Bunter and his dumb-ass Tory colleagues living on? Do they give a toss about this city and the people in it? Or is it that the city council provides a rather pleasant environment for a few of the city’s privileged Rotarians to sit about influencing things for themselves, collecting a bit more money through their expenses and making shit jokes?

You have to wonder how much longer Eddy can last as Tory leader now. He clearly lost an election badly that he should have won in May and now he’s brown-nosing the opposition he should be tearing to shreds!

Here’s Eddy’s impending contribution to our democracy in full:

MQ24 COUNCILLOR R EDDY TO ASK COUNCILLOR J
PRICE, EXECUTIVE MEMBER FOR NEIGHBOURHOODS

Q1. Does the Executive Member recall receiving an email on 19th November 2007, from the Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesman, Councillor Popham in connection with her recent offer to meet with Members to discuss the impact of changes in Housing Services?

Q2. Does she feel that Councillor Popham’s rather injudicious response (obviously only intended for the consumption of Liberal Democrat Councillors), in which he said “….many of these things I presume we would have implemented, so we cannot have us providing adverse feedback to the public via Labour on things we implemented….”, does anything to enhance the perception of local government?

Q3. Does she agree with me that such flagrant cynicism and politicking is wholly inappropriate for a Party, which seeks to present itself as a responsible Opposition?

Q4. Given the propensity of Liberal Democrat politicians to score such own goals (e.g. the recent “Calamity Clegg” dossier), what advice would she give to “Ponderous Popham” regarding his future use of Council email facilities?

Bunter Eddy: the term “stupid Tory cunt” could have been invented for him couldn’t it? He’s a fucking disgrace.

But all this does show up rather nicely the reality of Cameron’s Conservatives doesn’t it? Beneath the poor quality veneer of their PR lies the same old selfish, self-interested business clique who’ll do anything – even support an openly dishonest Labour regime they should oppose – as long as it continues to oil the wheels of their and their friends’ business interests.

Questions, questions 2: Residents' Parking Zones

Lib Dem Mark Wright has picked up on some points raised by The Blogger over on Charlie Bolton’s blog regarding the finances of the proposed Residents’ Parking Zones for wealthier inner city areas.

Council officers have been selling the scheme very hard as “revenue neutral”. Basically they’re claiming that the scheme will simply cover its costs and not make any money for the council.

However a brief glance at the council officers’ costings reveals that £800,000 of the money generated from the zones for the first five years will go to paying off the cost of setting up the scheme.

So what happens to this money after five years? Will the council slash the charges to keep the scheme revenue neutral? Or will they sneakily pocket the money hoping, five years down the line, we’ll have forgotten all about it?

The costings presented by officers also reveal a further £177,000 of income a year from the scheme that officers have blithely allocated to pay for park and ride services. So basically a tax is being levied on inner city residents to fund transport subsidies for suburban residents.

This actually means that a scheme that officers have claimed is “revenue neutral” will actually earn almost £1m every year.

And they wonder why we don’t believe a word they say.

Here’s some of the questions Wright will be asking Labour’s transport numpty, Mark Bradshaw. We’ll let you know the replies in due course.

Q1. The currently proposed increased permit charges of £40 and £200 (from £30 and £60) yield an extra £180k p/a (using the spreadsheet in the Cabinet paper, item 9, appendix 4). This neatly balances the £177k p/a cost of the commuter Park & Ride that
has been added to the scheme by the Labour Cabinet. What is the Exec Member’s justification for making city-centre residents subsidise suburban commuters?

Q2. Is it expected that Park & Ride will pay for itself in due course, or will it continue to need subsidy from the Residents’ Parking Zone?

Q3. The break-even costings of the CPZ include £803k p/a “Implementation costs repayment”. This should disappear after 5 years when the implementation costs are paid off. What then will happen to the extra £803k p/a?

Q4. The report notes “Enhanced public transport and Park and Ride services are to be developed to provide alternatives for commuters as ring fenced funds allow.” Is even more money from residents in central areas going to subsidise suburban commuters in future?

Q5. What transport improvements are being considered that would help the residents who actually paid the money?

Questions, questions 1: The bearded weirdoes investigate . . .

Some more excellent news regarding Bristol’s Labour administration’s use of our council tax.

Their latest money wasting wheeze has, apparently, been to launch an investigation into how The Bristol Blogger came to get a copy of their aimless and pointless Citizens’ Jury on Waste Report before most councillors.

Or that’s what Tory Councillor John Goulandris is claiming in a question to the Full Council next Tuesday:

Q6: What investigations have taken place into why the report was available on a blog site whilst being denied to Councillors?

Well that’s time and money well spent isn’t it? Particularly coming on top of the £100k already pissed away on the Citizens’ Jury process.

Anyway – to save Goulandris listening to the drivelling, snivelling shite that passes as a response from the Bristol Labour Party to any question ever put to them – the reason The Blogger got the paperwork before councillors is simple: the Labour administration deliberately withheld it from them.

What’s to investigate?

Labour Party funding: beyond farce

New rumour circulating is that the latest Labour donor under the microscope is Joseph Waugh, a bicycle shop manager from the North East. There must be a lot of money in bicycle shop management ’cause Mr Waugh donated £50,000 to the Labour Party in February 2006.

Meanwhile the Labour Party has launched an investigation into the whole affair fronted by some soft-headed ex-bishop and reporting to the party chairman, er . . . Harriet Harman! Herself at the centre of the scandal.

Much, much, more to follow as The Blogger learns that the Sundays have unleashed their political and investigative teams to pore over planning applications in the North East . . .

UPDATE: Here’s a poorly reported gem: Lib Dem leadership hopeful Chris Huhne appeared on the BBC’s Daily Politics today opposite the perma-tanned creep, Exeter’s Labour MP Ben Bradshaw.

In a lively spat Huhne openly accused the Labour Party of selling honours. Bradshaw announced that this was libellous. Huhne’s response? Serve a writ then!

Will that writ ever arrive we wonder? An open discussion in the High Court of Labour’s funding arrangements would certainly make for good sport. Bring it on!

Whoops! Green councillor shoots himself in foot!

Philip Street graf
Photos by _saturnine

It’s more bad news for Bristol’s backfiring green machine . . .

Ho, ho, ho . . .

Looks like Bristol Green Party’s uncanny knack to tune right in there on public opinion strikes again.

Ha, ha, ha . . .

You may recall The Blogger’s recent report about Southville Green councillor Charlie Bolton’s efforts to get rid of some graffiti on Philip Street that created a minor outcry on his blog.

Oh my aching sides . . .

Consequently super confident Bolton – obviously knowing his constituents only too well – responded:

Well, I find your comments something of a surprise.

I look at your pictures, and see two lists and a not very good Jam-type lyric myself.

Still, I’ll tell you what I will do.

There is a list – the Greater Bedminster Community Forum – of which I am a member (link on the rhs of this page – you are entitled to join)

I will ask people’s views on there. If there is a lot of support for retaining the images, well, fair play.

He, he, he . . .

And the people’s response to Bolton’s leading “Art or dross” question on the Greater Bedminster Forum?

If the owner is not bothered by or is unaware of this graffiti and its not abusive, who are we to say whether it should stay or go? Personally, I like it and am much more bothered by the enormous billboards that dominate the end of my road. Councillors, please dont waste too much time on this!

Totally agree. Billboards are an oppressive eyesore throughout the Bedminster area. Is planning permission, once granted, there forever? If these could be removed it would feel much more like home to communities living here, rather than a commercial industrial park. Then maybe there would be less motivation to indulge in the more disaffected type of graffiti.

I’m with Alice on the bill boards. I’m told that folk in St Werburgs waged a successful campaign to get bill boards (commercial graffiti!!) removed in their area.Does anyone know more about this? Is it true?

I think it’s important for society to allow it’s members to express themselves and to develop thinking that allows society to grow. However I don’t think that graffiti is necessarily the answer. If it is with the consent of the building holder and it’s not an eyesore (and we all have different views on that) then that’s okay.

I’m well so with the ‘lets not remove it’ brigade.

Okay, so this graffiti is a bit hackneyed, but when’s the last time you saw thought-provoking libertarian statements on commercially approved signage? At least this isn’t requesting/demanding that we part with cash! It could just be that the council disapproves of it for this very reason. (skeptic? moi? Si!) And the hackneyed statement IS thought provoking for people who have not yet grappled with the libertarian concepts it espouses, and there are one or two young people in this town, I gather, some of whom may be inspired to think for themselves as a result of seeing this graffiti.

We’re bombarded with adverts ALL THE TIME, so this is a breath of fresh air.

Well that’s pretty unaminous then. The people have spoken and the billboards plastered all over Southville are indeed dross and need to go.

So let’s hope Charlie steps up to the plate. The clear message is: leave the graffiti alone and go pick on someone your own size and get rid of all those ugly billboards owned by multinationals in Southville instead.

That should keep you busy Charlie. And do let us know how you get on. No doubt all those planning officers that allegedly work for you will be ever so helpful.

Ha, ha, ha . . .

(Helpful hint: you might want to start by finding out how many of these billboards even have planning permission. Then you can observe how keen your planning officers are to do their jobs and issue planning enforcement notices against the companies responsible. From this you should get a pretty clear idea who really owns the streets of our city. Will it be us – through our elected representatives and their planning officers – or will it be Clear Channel – a shower of far right dickbuckets from the US – assisted by our very own planning officers?)

Prostitution poll joy

Following The Blogger’s latest tirade on prostitution in Eastville last month, the local MP, Kerry McCarthy, has set up a poll on her website to explore opinion on the issue.

Options include the setting up of a formal tolerance zone rather than continue with Chief Constable, Colin Port’s informal one in residential Eastville. This is ahead by a whisker at present.

Remember: vote early – vote often.
