EDF off

If you’re over 65 or over, then make sure you get yourself down to the EDF Energy Harbour Festival on Saturday and grab a front row seat for the immensely ordinary Beth Rowley and a host of other stuff you’re probably not very interested in.

Then at least you can have some vaguely fond memories of the Labour Party and EDF Energy this winter when you can’t pay your massively increased fuel bills and slowly freeze to death …

youd think yeah in the 21st century, with all this money kicking around the country, that like we’d of decided by now that people should not die of hypothermia…… youd think anyway….

  4. Tom says:

Hardly anyoneactually dies from hypothermia and it not to do with increases in prices. The government (or EDF) are not allowed to risk assess and means test people to that extent. If they were then the few thousand oldies who were unable to sort out their heating problems themselves could be indentified and given free power. As it stands everyone gets a winter fuel allowance — which chould be enough to pay for a couple of months warmth — but still people do not have heating or are frightened to turn it on. Not a simple problem. The fact that the gas wholesale markets does not work properly because all the European generators — EDF anyone? — are state owned is another thing entirely.

  5. thebristolblogger says:

Regardless of whether people will die of hypothermia, rising fuel costs will plunge another 3,000 of the poorest households in Bristol in to fuel poverty this winter. They’ll join the 17,000 already there.

And will the fuel allowance increase by 25% to account for increased fuel costs?

I love the logic that people are cold because there’s not enough free market privatised energy companies who can charge what they like.

The truth of the matter is: We tossed our energy resources down the toilet 20 years ago, so now we have to ask the French and the Russians permission before we can so much as boil an egg. Meanwhile they, whose leaders did not sell their birthright, now have a surplus which they are kind enough to sell on to us… because if they didn’t the lights would start going out in London no doubt.

Perhaps if we had some more “State owned energy companies” we wouldn’t be in this mess…

  7. Dave says:

Or perhaps if we didn’t have the anti-nuclear power lobby stifling debate and shouting people down for even considering the option (Lib Dems, I’m looking at you) then we’d have clean, reliable energy sources like -ooh, I dunno, the French maybe, and we wouldn’t be in this mess.

What the anti-nuclear nuts don’t seem to realise is we get most of our electricity from the French, who
    1) Generate nearly all of it using Nuclear power stations, so much so that they’ve become a world leader in the manufacture of them
    2) Have sited a lot of these stations very close to the UK, meaning that even if the anti-nuclear fears of another Chernobyl were true (they’re not) then we’re buggered anyway.

Meanwhile we have a load of ignorant soap-dodging crusties campaigning against both coal AND nuclear power, believing the UK’s energy needs can all be met by a few wind farms, but only if we turn off our mobile phone chargers when we’re not using them.

who is the idoit who believies the price of gas is due to the fact that the wholesale gas markets in europe are state controlled? Gas prices are linked to the price of oil.
.European prices are lower then Uk.the high prices we are paying today and will pay tomorrow are due to tow main factors i believe supply & demand. and privitization in the Uk.

First we had the ‘Orange’ Ashton Court Festival, now its the ‘EDF’ Bristol Harbour Festival… whatever next? – The ‘British Gas’ Balloon Fiesta?

I do hate the way these corporate bodies use these events for advertising. How can they sponsor a majestic ship and then cover it with boring advertising banners? Surely I’m not the only one affected by this.

do any profits/surplus from the edf festival go to the city of bristol or paris?…
